Value of strain-wave sonoelastography as an imaging modality in assessment of benign acute myositis in children

Abstract: Purpose: Although sonoelastography has found itself application in assessment of many organs, studies for evaluation of muscles are very few in number and are mostly limited to adults. With this prospective study we aimed to evaluate the value of sonoelastography in assessment of influenza related benign acute myositis in children. Methods: This study enrolled 25 patients with a clinical diagnosis of benign acute childhood myositis (BACM) and 25 age and sex-matched healthy controls. All patients presented to ou… Show more

“…Recently, a contribution to the diagnosis of BACM may be given by the use of a new technology imaging modality the strain-wave sonoelastography. 29 Most alternative diagnoses can be readily excluded. Nonspecific myalgia is less severe and occurs at the climax of influenza infection.…”

“…UE was considered an additional tool for diagnosis of benign acute childhood myositis [ 100 ]; however, it did not accurately detect active myositis in patients with juvenile idiopathic inflammatory myopathy [ 101 ]. In addition, UE was also used for monitoring after surgical treatment of developmental hip dysplasia [ 102 ] and in evaluation and prevention of sports injuries [ 103 ].…”

“… 25 , 26 Sonoelastography is currently applied in the diagnosis of myositis and become a regular handy additional technique. 27 Patients with inclusion body myositis (IBM) have a noticeable increase in echogenic intensity of the muscles due to fatty substitution. Most prominently, US revealed a notable precision in contrast to MRI.…”
