Value of Ultrasound in Rheumatologic Diseases

Abstract: The use of musculoskeletal ultrasound in rheumatology clinical practice has rapidly increased over the past decade. Ultrasound has enabled rheumatologists to diagnose, prognosticate and monitor disease outcome. Although international standardization remains a concern still, the use of ultrasound in rheumatology is expected to grow further as costs fall and the opportunity to train in the technique improves. We present a review of value of ultrasound, focusing on major applications of ultrasound in rheumatologi… Show more

“…After measurement of serum and SF concentrations, we analyzed the relationship of the concentrations with clinical, radiographic and ultrasonographic findings. While the radiographic KL grading system provides osteophytes and joint space, ultrasonography is useful for evaluating synovial inflammation, change of articular cartilage, parts of the meniscus, ligament or tendon lesions as well as bony changes . Moreover, ultrasonography can provide useful information on soft tissues and cartilage involvement in early osteoarthritis with minimal symptoms .…”

“…The depth of the effusion was measured by the maximal anterior–posterior diameter of the suprapatellar recess . Osteophytes were defined as elevated step‐up bony fragments seen in two perpendicular planes close to joint space . With the knee flexed more to 45°, patellar tendons and bursae around patellar tendons were evaluated.…”

“…Porém, as máquinas de Ultrassonografia de alta qualidade têm demonstrado evidente vantagem devido à boa resolução da imagem e a percepção espacial da área articular, o que proporciona ao reumatologista identificar a inflamação e os danos estruturais, monitorar as doenças e prever as respostas terapêuticas 9 .…”
