Values for Macular Perimetry Using the MP-1 Microperimeter in Normal Subjects

Abstract: Purpose: To establish values for the fixation pattern and macular sensitivity to light in healthy subjects using the MP-1 microperimeter (Nideck Technologies, Vigonza, Italy). Method: A prospective study of 37 healthy subjects (age: 19–71 years), approved by the institutional review board. Full-threshold microperimetry of the central 12° of the retina (the macula) was performed prospectively, utilizing 16 points with the MP-1. The fixation stability was simultaneously recorded during microperimetry testing. Th… Show more

“…20 In healthy subjects aged 19-71 years, MS ranges from 13 to 19 (mean 18.3) dB with a linear decline in sensitivity with increasing age. 21 In our patients, mean MS threshold slowly improved approaching normal levels at 3 or 6 months post-operatively except in patient 3. Interestingly the weak correlation between our post-operative MP-1 and BCVA results indicate that mean MS is a functional parameter relatively independent from BCVA after macula-off RD repair.…”

“…24 In the present study, we suggest that the fixation stability within 2°and 4°in myopic subjects with normal corrected visual acuity did not need to be taken into consideration when analyzing the results.…”

“…[15][16][17][18][19][20] The parameters in normal subjects of different age, sex, and race, as well as interand intraexaminer reliability have been studied to determine the effects of these extraneous variables on measurements. 22,24 In these reports, MP1 measurements exhibited high inter-and intraexaminer reliability. Macular function measured by MP1 in normal subjects decreased with age, but had no apparent relationship with sex and race, 22,24 providing support for further usage of MP1 in clinical applications.…”

“…The RS assessed by MP was known to be the same within the central 61 of the macula in normal subjects. 31 Therefore, the correlation analysis between RS and RPT needs to be stratified according to the test location. The correlation coefficient between RS and RPT decreased after controlling for EPIS status and test location.…”
