Abstract: The first report of the use of vanadium for the treatment of diabetes mellitus (DM) was published by the French physician Dr. B. Lyonnet, who in 1899 described the ability of the simple vanadium compound sodium vanadate, Na 3 VO 4 (Figure 7.1), to lower the blood sugar levels of diabetic patients [1].
