Vapor-Liquid Equilibrium Calculation for Simulation of Bioethanol Concentration From Sugarcane

Abstract: The robustness of the simulation of bioethanol concentration from sugarcane faces two major challenges: the presence of several minor components and the nonlinear behavior of vapor-liquid equilibrium (VLE) calculations. This work assesses the effect of simplifications to overcome these difficulties. From a set of seventeen substances, methanol, n-propanol, isobutanol, 2-methyl-1-butanol and 3-methyl-1-butanol were selected through the examination of the influence of each minor component on vapor-liquid equilib… Show more

“…The UNIFAC model (group contribution model) is very common in the chemical industry to estimate equilibrium, as well as the NRTL model (local composition model) are complex equations that fit well with actual mixtures such as those processed by industry of ethanol. It is due to this that commonly the literature uses the predictive models NRTL-HOC and UNIF-DMD for the modeling of fusel oil (POLING et al, 2000;SANZ;GMEHLING, 2008;FERREIRA et al, 2013;EUSTÁCIO et al, 2018;MATUGI et al, 2018;MACHADO et al, 2019).…”

“…(6) Equation (6) consists of the modified Raoult's Law (in the gamma-phi approach) which considers the non-idealities in the liquid phase ( ), and in the vapor phase ), being the Equation (6) adopted by the literature as a typical modeling for distillation of the sugar and alcohol industry (BATISTA; MEIRELLES, 2011;EUSTÁCIO et al, 2018;MATUGI et al, 2018).…”

“…The practical use of hydrated ethanol represents an essential factor for the reducing costs related to the energy consumed in the process (Venturini et al, 2018;Tura et al, 2018;Matugi et al, 2018;Robertson and Pavlath, 1985;Fagundez et al, 2017;Cataluña et al, 2017). The production of first and second-generation ethanol in the same industrial plant presents better financial results compared to the isolated processes (Silva et al, 2017;Caetano et al, 2015b;Dias et al, 2012;Ojeda et al, 2011;Seabra et al, 2010).…”
