Vapor‐Phase Linker Exchange of the Metal–Organic Framework ZIF‐8: A Solvent‐Free Approach to Post‐synthetic Modification

Abstract: Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) are a sub‐class of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs). Although generally stable, ZIFs can undergo post‐synthetic linker exchange (PSLE) in solution under mild conditions. Herein, we present a novel, solvent‐free approach to post‐synthetic linker exchange through exposure to linker vapor.

“…Vapour-phase ligand exchange (VPLE) has also been used to incorporate different imidazole derivatives, although it is limited to certain imidazoles, resulting in some cases in a transformation into dense phases. 36 Nevertheless, a major limitation of post-synthetic strategies is the incorporation of additional synthetic steps, which hinders a scalable process and therefore a commercial use.…”

“…As such, there is growing interest in methods to sustainably introduce organic entities into MOFs without using solvents. 24,25 The present work is focused on the introduction of 5hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), a platform chemical that can be derived from biomass, for the subsequent formation of synthetic humins inside the pores of a MOF, utilizing a solvent-free approach. Our interest in humins is owed to the high density of active functionality (hydroxy groups, ester groups, etc.)…”

“…Recently, we reported vapor-phase linker exchange of ZIF-8 by imidazole linkers with halogen groups for reconstructing the pore microenvironment of the pores . Marreiros et al exposed ZIF-8 in vapor linkers for postsynthetic linker exchange . Eum et al controlled the separation performance of the ZIF-8 membrane through vapor linker treatment .…”

“…27 Marreiros et al exposed ZIF-8 in vapor linkers for postsynthetic linker exchange. 28 Eum et al controlled the separation performance of the ZIF-8 membrane through vapor linker treatment. 29 Therefore, we envisage whether vaporphase deposition can be employed for postsynthetic grafting modification.…”
