“…Fish food habits can vary greatly throughout ontogeny in both size and type of prey consumed (Werner and Gilliam 1984;Chipps and Garvey 2007;Gray et al 2015;Marsh et al, this issue). Arctic staghorn sculpin generally shifted towards consuming larger individuals of similar prey groups (i.e., larger benthic amphipods and polychaetes) rather than fish prey or shrimps.…”

“…Following Nakamura et al (2003) and Egan et al (2017), trophic-guild statistical analyses were limited to species for which at least five individual stomachs contained identifiable prey. Fish diets are known to shift throughout ontogeny (Chipps & Garvey, 2007;Gray et al, 2016Gray et al, , 2017Werner & Gilliam, 1984), making it appropriate to divide fish species into size groupings prior to guild classification if such shifts indeed exist (Buchheister & Latour, 2015;Elliott et al, 2007;Egan et al, 2017;Garrison & Link, 2000;Scharf et al, 2000;Specziár & Rezsu, 2009). Therefore, prior to the guild analysis, we employed a distance-based linear modelling procedure (DISTLM) to screen species for significant relationships amongst fish L T and the prey response data, which included up to 25 prey groups per species (Table 1).…”

“…The remaining 12 papers describe studies on various aspects of polar cod only. These include studies of ecotoxicology (Bakke et al 2016), population genetics (Madsen et al 2016), distribution and habitat use (Astthorsson 2016;Crawford 2016;David et al 2016;Geoffroy et al 2016;Kessel et al 2016;Kono et al 2016), diets of juveniles and adults (Gray et al 2016;Majewski et al 2016;Nakano et al 2016) and reproductive biology . Combined, the current special issue is, at least in the western scientific literature, so far the largest single step forward in our understanding of the ecology, life history and distribution of Arctic gadids in a changing Arctic.…”
