Variability of breeding system, caryopsis microstructure and germination in annual and perennial species of the genus Brachypodium P. Beauv.

Abstract: The basis of any patterns of variation in plant populations is the breeding system they express. In the genus Brachypodium, the breeding system ranges from autogamy in facultatively chasmogamic Brachypodium distachyon to allogamy in obligatory chasmogamic B. pinnatum. B. distachyon and B. sylvaticum appeared to be extremes with respect to dormancy and germination behaviour. Winter and facultatively biennial forms of the annual B. distachyon expressed an intermediate dormancy behaviour towards perennial species… Show more

“…Pollen variability (Dzyuba et al 2006;Karabournioti et al 2007;Costa et al 2016) can be evaluated by assessing pollen viability, morphology and pollen-stigma compatibility reactions, thus obtaining crucial information about the plant breeding systems (Kosina and Tomaszewska 2015). Pollen size (De Storme et al 2013) and number of poruses (Kihara 1982;Kalinowski et al 2001Kalinowski et al , 2005 are other important biological parameters for assessing the ploidy of plants, especially in newly formed hybrid units.…”

“…al. 2007; Costa et al 2016) can be evaluated by measuring pollen viability, assessing its morphology, and studying pollen-stigma compatibility reactions, thus obtaining important information on the plant breeding systems (Kosina and Tomaszewska 2015). Other biological parameters, such as pollen size (De Storme et al 2013) and number of poruses (Kihara 1982; Kalinowski et al 2001, 2005), are important for assessing the ploidy of plants, in particular of newly formed hybrid units.…”

“…Barrero et al [ 29 ] provided an anatomical description of Brachypodium caryopsis and also studied grain dormancy. Later, studies on the global histone modifications and DNA methylation changes during embryonic and postembryonic growth in Brachypodium [ 30 , 31 ] and on the breeding system, caryopsis structure, and germination [ 32 ] in annual and perennial Brachypodium species were performed.…”
