Variability of Phenolic Compound Accumulation and Antioxidant Activity in Wild Plants of Some Rumex Species (Polygonaceae)

Abstract: Today, more than ever, the search for non-trivial sources of biologically active substances is critical. Plants of the genus Rumex are noteworthy. Plants of this genus stand out for a number of advantages from the dominant plant core of meadow phytocenoses of the temperate climatic zone: a short growing season, an intensive increase in biomass, and undemanding growth conditions. In addition, this plant genus is known as a super-producer of secondary phenolic compounds. The wide distribution and intensive synth… Show more

“…Significant correlations were found between TotP and antioxidant capacity assayed by means ABTS ( Figure 3 A) and DPPH ( Figure 3 B) methods. Our data are in agreement with other reports indicating the relationship between total phenolics content and antioxidant capacity [ 39 , 40 ]. Conversely, Sotek et al [ 30 ] did not find in plantain a correlation between TotP and antioxidant capacity with ABTS assay.…”

“…Antioxidant activity depends on the content of different classes of phytocomponents in the samples. Typically, phenolic compounds have a significant effect on the total antioxidant activity of extracts [50,51].…”

“…The research team used the spectrophotometric method using the Arno reagent to determine the total hydroxycinnamic acid content [51,81]. Then, 1 mLof vegetable extract, 2 mL of 0.5 M HCl, 2 mL of Arno reagent, and 2 mL of 8.5% NaOH were added to 10 mL tubes.…”

“…To determine the antioxidant activity, the extracts prepared as described in Section 4.2.1 were used. The antioxidant activity of the extracts was determined by the ability to capture radicals of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2’-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzthiazolino-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS), as well as by the reducing power when interacting with the Fe(III)-2,4,6-tripyridyl-s-triazine complex (FRAP), according to [ 54 ].…”
