Variability of Platelet-rich Plasma Preparations

Abstract: Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) as a clinical treatment for bone, muscle, tendon, and cartilage injury has gained popularity in the field of orthopedic sports medicine. The use of a patient's own blood is an appealing aspect of PRP treatment, as the resulting plasma preparation is considered relatively benign in comparison with more common, potentially caustic treatments such as corticosteroids and anesthetics. Although appealing, the autologous nature of PRP introduces variability to plasma preparations, creating … Show more

“…leukocytes. It has been demonstrated that the optimal platelet concentration corresponds to 3 to 4 198 times the blood concentration (<10 6 platelets/µL) 24,25 . However, more than 1.2 x 10 6 platelet/µL 199 lead to an inhibition of collagen synthesis 23,25 .…”

“…Differences in patients at the time of the blood draw result in plasma preparations that vary both within and between patients. This variability is compounded by the multitude of protocols and devices available for procuring PRP [598]. Criteria for PRP dosing and for tailoring preparations to each pathological situation have yet to be established.…”

“…Furthermore, different preparation methods aggravate the wide variability in the composition of different PRP products [13]. Kushida et al [14] reported great differences in growth factor concentrations in the activated PRP of seven commercial preparation systems.…”
