Variation between glaucous and non-glaucous near-isogenic lines of rye (Secale cereale L.) under drought stress

Abstract: Glaucous (811, L35, and RXL10) and non-glaucous (811bw, L35bw, and RXL10bw) near-isogenic lines (NILs) of rye (Secale cereale L.) forming three pairs of inbred lines were the subject of the research. The research aimed to study the relationship between wax cover attributes and the physio-biochemical drought reactions and yield of rye NILs and to uncover the differences in drought resistance levels of these lines. The greatest differences between glaucous and non-glaucous NILs were observed in the RXL10/RXL10bw… Show more

“…drought between wheat and rye. Yet, there are some studies that attribute a higher tolerance to heat and drought in rye compared to wheat due to its phenological advantages and pronounced root system [19,[62][63][64][65]. We also find higher yield losses for wheat, if we only filter yield data those year × trial site combinations where both wheat and rye were cultivated simultaneously (appendix-figure B).…”

“…Although it is widely reported that the use of UAN as a herbicide carrier can increase the foliar uptake of herbicides and increase weed control efficacy (Bunting et al 2004; Fielding and Stoller 1990; Koger et al 2007; Miller et al 1999), there was no increase in efficacy with UAN as the herbicide carrier in this study. This could be due to winter rye having glaucous leaves covered with epicuticular wax (Laskoś et al 2022; Shepherd and Wynne Griffiths 2006) that reduces herbicide absorption compared to plants with a thinner layer of epicuticular wax (Baker and Hunt 1981).…”

“…Three of them were located in the vicinity of an outlier with the highest statistic score, which was identified in group g4a (Carsten heterotic pool). Oacyltransferases WSD1 are involved in cuticular wax biosynthesis, which acts in plants as a protective barrier against biotic and abiotic stresses, including drought [55][56][57]. Genes representing GO term polygalacturonase activity, were also found to be significantly enriched among putative candidates for selection.…”
