Indonesia's mindset has been focusing on the use of natural medicines, food, and healing practices widely recognized by the nation's culture. Traditional medicines and herbs used in traditional medicine can often lead to the discovery of drugs against certain diseases. The aim of this review was to study evidence-based data on the importance of Sembung plant, Blumea balsamifera, as a potential traditional medicine. The distribution, ethnopharmacology, secondary metabolites, and bioactivity against several diseases are focused in this review. Information and research related to Sembung plant were searched using the terms "B. balsamifera," "phytochemicals," and "pharmacological activity" on ResearchGate, Google Scholar, Science Direct, PubMed, and scientific information-based databases up to 2020. Several ethnomedical articles recommend B. balsamifera for the treatment of sinusitis, colic pain, cough, kidney stones, flu, or as a diuretic. This knowledge has already been applied in several countries in Southeast Asia. B. balsamifera has been reported to contain several phytochemicals both volatile (terpenoids, fatty acids, phenols, alcohol, aldehydes, ethers, ketones, pyridines, furans, and alkanes) and non-volatile (flavonoids, flavanones, and chalcones). Extracts and phytochemicals of B. balsamifera contain several biological capacities such as antioxidant, antimicrobial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, hypolipidemic, anti-infertility, hepatoprotective activity, antidiabetic, gastroprotective, antitumor, anticancer, and immunomodulatory agent against Coronavirus disease-19 infection. This review provides essential data for the potential application of B. balsamifera as a nutraceutical or in future medicinal preparations.

Garlic is a well-known species of the genus Allium that acts as a natural chemotherapeutic agent and used for cure and prevention against enteric diseases. In addition, its essential oil has provided a promising way to treat different human associated diseases. Consequently, Mycobacterium tuberculosis causes tuberculosis among immunosuppressed individuals and develops resistance rapidly due to inappropriate therapy. Indeed, an alternative therapy is need of the hour to control resistance of mycobacterial strains. Concerned with the development of drug-resistant strains, garlic essential oil (GEO) in liquid and volatile phase was investigated against Mycobacterium smegmatis using in-vitro techniques. Furthermore, validation of anti-mycobacterial effect using GEO was also determined on M. tuberculosis with its drug resistant variants. Different in-vitro techniques, that is, extraction and identification of five major volatile constituents from GEO using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, were initially analyzed and screened out for exploration of anti-mycobacterial susceptibility tests. In addition, inverted disc method and anti-biofilm assay by GEO vapor were determined for evaluating its volatile efficacy. The efficiency of GEO in liquid phase showed growth inhibiting value at 0.03 mg/mL and 0.5 mg/mL as bactericidal concentration against M. smegmatis. Whereas, M. tuberculosis (H37Rv), isoniazid, and rifampicin resistant strains were found to be inhibitory concentration at 0.003, 0.06, and 0.03 mg/mL, respectively. Furthermore, 1 mg for inverted disc-vapor assay and 0.125 mg for antibiofilm assay in air-liquid interface were found to prevent M. smegmatis growth efficiently. Thus, vapor contact of GEO serves as a novel strategy for anti-mycobacterial activity for TB-disease. In addition, it might be introducing a novel volatile therapy technique against different pulmonary infection.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the essential oil composition as well as antibacterial activities of essential oil of Lantana camara L flowers against four bacterial strains. Essential oil of Lantana camara L flowers was obtained by hydrodistillation method using Sthal and analyzed by GC-MS. The antibacterial activities of essential oil were tested by using disk diffusion method against four bacterial strains. Results showed 72 compounds for Lantana flowers essential oil, of which caryophyllene (10,87%), davanone (9.84%), a-humulene (7.59%), a-curcumene (3.35%), germacrene D (3.09%), calarene (2.42%), a-muurolene (2.27%), p-cymene (1.79%), 1,8 cineole (1.59%) , δ-cadinene (1.59%), a-copaene (1.12%), nerolidol B (1%) and ß-ocimene (0.54%) were detected as major components. Antibacterial activity assay of Lantana camara L flowers essential oil was examined against four bacterial strains including Gram (+and-) by using disk diffusion agar method. All the tested Gram (+and-) bacterial strains displayed slight to moderate antibacterial activity (7 – 10 mm) against all concentrations of essential oil. The essential oil of Lantana camara L flowers showed remarkable antibacterial activity with inhibition in concentrations of 10% and 20% against the phatogen bacterias Basillus subtilis (9.6 mm; 10.8 mm), Propionibacterium acnes ( 7.6 mm; 8.7 mm), Eschechia coli ( 8.4 mm ; 9.6 mm) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa ( 8.3 mm ; 9.3 mm) showed from zone of inhibition that was formed, zone of inhibition in concentration 20% was bigger than concentration 10%.
