Variations in Spectral Absorption Properties of Phytoplankton, Non-algal Particles and Chromophoric Dissolved Organic Matter in Lake Qiandaohu

Abstract: Abstract:Light absorption by phytoplankton, non-algal particles (NAP) and chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) was investigated at 90 sites of a clear, deep artificial lake (Lake Qiandaohu) to study natural variability of absorption coefficients. Our study shows that CDOM absorption is a major contributor to the total absorption signal in Lake Qiandaohu during all seasons, except autumn when it has an equivalent contribution as total particle absorption. The exponential slope of CDOM absorption varies … Show more

“…This atmospheric correction has been adapted for OLI images [7]. Its good performance, relative to other atmospheric corrections used for monitoring of the water quality of lakes and reservoirs, was shown when such data were compared with in situ radiometric data obtained using an ASD-FR spectroradiometer [37,38].…”

“…29 The methods for laboratory measurements of a p ðλÞ, a ph ðλÞ, a NAP ðλÞ, and a CDOM ðλÞ are described in detail by Babin et al 30 and in our previous study. 22 For this study, water samples were processed onboard the ship immediately after collection. CDOM samples were first filtered through a 47-mm diameter Whatman GF/F filter with a pore size of 0.7 μm, and then refiltered through 47-mm diameter millipore polycarbonate filters with pore sizes of 0.22 μm, before being stored in the darkness in a refrigerator.…”

“…22 The lake's water quality is maintained at a high level, with a mean Secchi disk depth of ∼4.5 m, and its dissolved oxygen concentration never falls below 2 mg∕L. 23 These characteristics differ significantly from those of Taihu Lake, the water quality of which suffers dramatic change in both IOPs and trophic levels.…”

“…Water suspension is one of the most important optically active components of any natural or manmade water body. Along with yellow substance (YS), chlorophyll a and pure water, suspension has a significant effect on total light attenuation (Kopelevich, 1983;Reinart et al, 2004;Mankovsky and Sherstyankin, 2007;Mankovsky, 2011;Onderka et al, 2011;Shuchman et al, 2013;Levin, 2014;Korosov et al, 2017;Shi et al, 2017;Churilova et al, 2018). Therefore, its optical characteristics dependent on particles' size, quantity, material, shape and orientation require a thorough study.…”
