Variegatic acid from the edible mushroom Tylopilus ballouii inhibits TNF-α production and PKCβ1 activity in leukemia cells

“…Numerous mushroom bioactive metabolites such as variegatic acid from Tylopilus ballouii (Sugaya et al., 2020), proteoglycans and ergosterol from A. blazei (Sun et al., 2020), Pleurotus ostreatus extract (Ebrahimi et al., 2018), ethanol extracts from A. bisporus (Jagadish et al., 2009) and water‐soluble polysaccharide from Inonotus taiwanensis (Chao et al., 2018) inhibited the proliferation of leukemia cells and other human leukemia cell lines via the induction of apoptosis. A variegatic acid, isolated from Tylopilus ballouii dry fruiting bodies, inhibited β‐hexosaminidase release and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)‐α secretion from rat basophilic leukemia (RBL‐2H3) cells, as well as PKCβ1 activity (Sugaya et al., 2020). The Pleurotus ostreatus extract decreased the proliferation of leukemia cell lines (KG‐1 and Jurkat cells) but had no antiproliferative effects on bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells.…”
