Vascular endothelial growth factor gene polymorphisms and colorectal cancer risk: a meta-analysis

Abstract: Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is an endothelial cell-specific mitogen involved in a number of pathologic processes, including angiogenesis, tumor growth and metastasis. Polymorphisms of the VEGF gene have been associated with susceptibility to colorectal cancer (CRC). However, the specific association still remains controversial. We made a meta-analysis of the association between VEGF gene polymorphisms and CRC risk. Only eight case-control studies were retrieved, with a total of 2337 CRC pa… Show more

“…Although there has been a meta-analysis to assess whether a relationship exists between the VEGF polymorphism and risk of CRC, it included eight case-control studies and found that only the VEGF -2578C/A polymorphism appeared to be associated with the risk of CRC (Zhou et al, 2011a). We identified 12 epidemiologic studies, which included 2770 CRC cases and 2568 controls.…”

“…Although there are some studies to investigate the association between VEGF polymorphism and risk of CRC, results have been inconsistent (Maltese et al, 2009;Wu et al, 2009;Antonacopoulou et al, 2011;Kang et al, 2011;Zhang et al, 2011;Zhou et al, 2011a). A recent meta-analysis of eight casecontrol studies found that only the VEGF -2578C/A polymorphism appeared to be associated with the risk of CRC (Zhou et al, 2011a).…”

“…I 2 values of 25, 50, and 75% were defined as low, moderate, and high estimates, respectively. When I 2 > 50%, heterogeneity was indicated across studies and the random-effect model was used for meta-analysis; otherwise, the fixed-effect model was used (Zhou et al, 2011;Zhong et al, 2012). Stratified analysis was performed according to ethnicity.…”
