Vector Correlations in Dissociative Photoionization of Diatomic Molecules in the VUV Range: Strong Anisotropies in Electron Emission from Spatially Oriented NO Molecules

Abstract: Imaging and time-resolved coincidence techniques are combined to determine ion-electron (v-->(i),v-->(e)) velocity correlations in dissociative photoionization of diatomic molecules induced by synchrotron linearly polarized light P-->. The (v-->(i),v-->(e), P-->) vector correlation yields the identification of each process, together with the ( straight theta(e), straight phi(e)) electron emission in the molecule frame for each orientation of the internuclear axis with respect to the polarization. Strong electr… Show more

“…Our coincidence momentum imaging apparatus is based on a measurement of electron and ion time of flight (TOF) with two multi-hit two-dimensional position sensitive detectors [23][24][25]. Similar apparatus are used by other groups as well [9,26,27]. A supersonic jet of CO 2 in the vertical direction crosses the photon beam in the horizontal direction.…”

“…The use of short intense laser pulses [9] to spatially align molecules, which can be ionized after a controlled delay in field free conditions with a XUV femtosecond pulse [10], has opened recently a possibility to measure molecular frame photoemission, particularly valuable for the study of non-dissociative PI reactions under the condition of a high degree of initial alignment. The alternative approach, presented in this paper, is to take advantage of dissociative photoionization (DPI) reactions to measure the molecular frame photoelectron angular distributions (MFPADs) from an assembly of isotropically oriented molecules, using the vector correlation (VC) method [11,12] or another momentum spectroscopy like the COLTRIMS method [13]. Indeed, for linear molecules breaking into two fragments in the axial recoil approximation [14], i.e.…”
