Vegetable oil formulation as biopesticide to control California red scale (Aonidiella aurantii Maskell)

Abstract: During laboratory tests, mineral oil in water emulsion (2%), containing Brassicaceae seed meals (2 g l ¡1 ), induced total mortality (100%) among adult female California red scales on detached orange fruits, whereas only 47.5% of insect mortality was observed with the same mineral oil when used alone. These results were partially conWrmed by two preliminary Weld trials. With the aim of improving biodegradability and the environmental impact of the insecticidal formulation, mineral oil was replaced by a vegetab… Show more

“…An excellent alternative to synthetic chemical insecticides to protect crops comes from vegetable oils (Rongai et al, 2008). Senecio species have been commonly used as medicines to cure injuries, as antiinflammatory agents, as an antiemetic and as dry powder or coarse extract to protect crops (Portero et al, 2012).…”

“…Oil products are traditionally used against different stages of aphids or scale insects [ 36 , 37 , 38 ]. The mode of action was long supposed to be due to suffocation by blocking spiracles and tracheas of insects [ 39 ].…”

“…In addition, some interesting results in containing California red scale (Aonidiella aurantii Maskell), a small insect with low mobility, were observed using a patented formulation based on a vegetable oil-water emulsion after the addition of a suitable amount of B. carinata A. Braun defatted seed meals (DSM) (Rongai et al, 2008a). In this kind of formulations, the water activates the enzymatic hydrolysis of glucosinolates (GLs) via myrosinase with a controlled release of the corresponding degradation products, mainly allylisothiocyanate (AITC) (Fahey et al, 2001).…”
