Vegetation structure and potential gross primary productivity of mangroves at Kadolkele in Meegamuwa (Negombo) estuary, Sri Lanka

Abstract: The potential gross primary productivity of the mangrove stands at Kadolkele in Meegamuwa (Negombo) estuary was studied in relation to vegetation structure with a view to understanding the salient structural components that affect functioning of mangrove ecosystems. Structure of mangrove stands under study was characterized with plant species richness, plant (stem) density, frequency of occurrence of constituent species, plant basal area and height. The structural complexity index values calculated from above … Show more

“…In the same direction, R. mucronata has been reported to tolerate drought periods (Duke 2006;Robert et al 2015). Reduced leaf area of seedlings with increasing salinity, a trend that was observed with the four species studied here, confirms similar findings reported with other species (Ball 2002;Súarez & Medina 2005;Kathiresan 2007;Jayakody et al 2008;Kodikara et al 2017;Siddique et al 2017).…”

“…Complexity index (CI) represents the vegetation structure of the mangrove stand, that contributes to functions of the mangrove ecosystem, revealed a strong positive relationship with the GPP calculated for Negombo estuary and similar relationships were reported by Jayakody et al (2008) and Perera et al (2010) for mangrove areas in Negombo estuary.…”

“…Clustering analysis (through PCA, etc.) has previously been used to detect genetic variance, original forest and vegetation characteristics [82,84,85], environmental parameters or faunal communities [86,87]. Further advantages and limitations of the present methodological approach with respect to GIS, remote sensing and statistical analyses were provided in Table 5.…”
