“…Only four were left with a mild, localised residual numbness, but not pain [5]. Over a two-year period in a blood transfusion centre, Berry and Wallis reported six patients with painful nerve injuries after venepuncture in the antecubital fossa, with an annual incidence of 1:25 000 [6]. A summary of studies between 1977 and 1985 reporting venepuncture associated nerve injuries collated 93 cases; more than two thirds reported satisfactory outcome at three months, but approximately 17% were left with permanent sequelae [7].…”

“…son raras, 16-32/100.000 1,2 , estas pueden ser causa de discapacidad importante en algunos pacientes 3,4 , los reportes al respecto se refieren en la mayoría de los casos, a lesiones en donadores de sangre en donde las agujas son más gruesas y largas que las utilizadas para tomar muestras sanguíneas. Son pocos los casos reportados de lesiones producidas por venopunciones para pruebas de laboratorio, en dónde las agujas son menos gruesas.…”

“…A more specific impression of the incidence rate can be obtained only by considering two studies from blood transfusion centres. In a New Zealand blood transfusion unit performing approximately 80,000 venepunctures a year, Berry and Wallis 24 found that, over a 2-year period, six people suffered injuries to the median nerve or medial and lateral cutaneous nerves which were severe enough for them to seek medical attention -an overall rate of approximately 1 in 25,000 (0.004%). Of those six, only one (noted above) was undergoing venepuncture for diagnostic purposes, using a 20-gauge needle; the remaining five were undergoing venepuncture for blood donation, using a larger 16-gauge needle.…”
