Venus Flytrap Seedlings Show Growth-Related Prey Size Specificity

Abstract: Venus flytrap (Dionaea muscipula) has had a conservation status of vulnerable since the 1970s. Little research has focussed on the ecology and even less has examined its juvenile stages. For the first time, reliance on invertebrate prey for growth was assessed in seedling Venus flytrap by systematic elimination of invertebrates from the growing environment. Prey were experimentally removed from a subset of Venus flytrap seedlings within a laboratory environment. The amount of growth was measured by measuring t… Show more

“…It may be further worth testing for possible correlations of the trap age versus a trap content (cf. Hatcher and Hart 2014 ). Laboratory feeding experiments on selected prey taxa should determine the absolute capturing preferences of these taxa.…”

“…A similar non-selective prey capture behaviour has been reported from adult traps of the Venus flytrap ( D. muscipula ) 32,34 . Interestingly, traps of D. muscipula seedlings capture different prey, which apparently are too small to trigger the adult traps 35 . Such potential prey specificity at different growth stages has not yet been reported for A. vesiculosa .…”
