Verifying the Drude response

Abstract: By now more than 100 years passed since Paul Drude suggested his highly acclaimed model of electronic transport. In the form advanced by A. Sommerfeld, the Drude model is still heavily utilized to describe, for instance, the optical properties of metals. Surprisingly, the key prediction of the Drude model, the frequency dependence of the complex conductivity with its pronounced roll-off was directly observed in an experiment only very recently. Here we present direct and independent measurements of both the re… Show more

“…Despite its simplicity, the Drude model parameters has been utilized to fit experimental results [6], in particular in terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) [7], which is a contactless technique in which the properties of solids are probed with short pulses of terahertz radiation. However, a more realistic description of the electron gas system requires a quantum mechanical model.…”

“…The model, as discussed below, involves just a single relaxation parameter. Despite its simplicity, it has been verified for charge transport over a spectral range from MHz to the optical frequencies (Dressel and Scheffler, 2006) in various materials.…”

“…The crux of our model is how these dynamic quantities are modeled. The Lorentz and Drude models of material response are widely used to describe the THz frequency response of excited molecules and charge carriers [18]. These models can be expressed as the classical, damped, and driven masson-a-spring-like oscillator through the equation of motion:…”
