Veteran trees and saproxylic insects in the floodplains of Lower Morava and Dyje rivers, Czech Republic

Abstract: Veteran and solitary trees are key structures supporting biodiversity in many wooded ecosystems. Their global decline threatens numerous organisms associated with them, including several insect species protected by law that serve as umbrella species. The floodplain along the lower Morava and Dyje rivers is considered a hotspot for saproxylic organisms associated with veteran trees. The area is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and part of NATURA 2000. Between 2006 and 2015, we mapped 11,596 veteran and habitat trees … Show more

“…An accumulating number of evidences in Europe shows that large old trees have exceptional ecological values, serving as habitats for a large number of protected species in Europe in open pastures, parklands, forests, orchards and urbanized areas (see e.g. Horak, 2014; Horák and Rébl, 2012; Koch et al, 2012; Lachat et al, 2012; Miklín et al, 2017; Müller et al, 2014; Sebek et al, 2013). As the protected areas in Romania were classically underfunded and suffers from lack of reliable informations regarding the biodiversity based on which management actions can be implemented (Ioja et al, 2010) citizen science types of activities could help in inventorying large old trees (Loos et al, 2015).…”

“…We believe that GTR aimed at legacy trees can be a very important conservation tool for the sustainable management of hardwood floodplain forests [43]. We need further evaluation of the effectiveness of GTR in differently managed forest types/biomes in order to address the wider application of biodiversity conservation in sustainable forest management practice.…”
