Vinylidene Fluoride Polymers

Abstract: Poly(vinylidene fluoride), PVDF, [CH 2 CF 2 ] n , is the addition polymer of vinylidene fluoride, VDF, CH 2 CF 2 . It has achieved a high level of usage during the past 40 years based upon the excellent resistance to chemicals, weathering elements, and oxidants, as well as for special properties such as piezoelectric characteristics and fire resistance. It is a… Show more

“…However, peaks derived from reverse head-to-head linkages are usually observed in VDF-based telomers, 21 oligomers 23 and copolymers. 2,3,24 Nevertheless, in the iodine transfer polymerization of VDF in the presence of C 6 F 13 I or C 6 F 13 CH 2 CF 2 I, reverse head-to-head additions were not observed. 13,14 The 1 H NMR spectrum of the telomer (Figure 2, lower spectrum) was in agreement with the results of 19 F NMR spectroscopy.…”

“…Thus, PVDF has been used in high-tech applications, such as [1][2][3] paints and coatings, medical suture wires, mechanical substrates for fuel cell membranes, liners for containers used to carry corrosive substances (for example, bromine), separators for lithium ion batteries and backsheets for photovoltaic cells. In addition, PVDF is a piezoelectric polymer, 4,5 and pressure or mechanical stress can induce an electrical response.…”

“…Therefore, the efforts of researchers are focused on the preparation and increasing the content of the β -phase. This phase is directly connected with the trans-conformations of the polymer chains [4][5][6]. It is well known from the literature that the addition of montmorillonite fillers to polymers can stabilize a metastable phase and induce polymorphism.…”

“…One of the most important fluoropolymers used today is poly (vinylidene difluoride) (PVDF) [6] which is used in a number of applications where chemical resistance, mechanical strength and high creep resistance are required [7]. PVDF is used in piezoelectric sensors, chemically inert pipes and hoses in chemical refineries, wire jacketing for electrical components in areas with possible chemical attack and coatings for skyscraper exteriors [8]. In the off-shore oil and gas industry, PVDF is considered the prime sheathing material for flow, choke and kill lines due to chemical resistance and wide service temperature window (-20°C to 120°C).…”
