Viral Agents Associated with Poult Enteritis in Croatian Commercial Turkey Flocks

Abstract: From 2003 to 2006, samples of intestinal content and spleens from 10-day-old to 6-week-old fattening turkeys showing clinical signs of enteritis were analyzed by specific PCR and RT-PCRs for detection of haemorrhagic enteritis virus (HEV), avian reovirus (ARV), turkey astrovirus-2 (TastV-2), and turkey coronavirus (TCV). A total of 23 flocks from 6 farms were included in the study. Specific sequence for HEV hexon gene was present in 6 samples from turkeys younger than and in one turkey at 6 weeks of age. A pro… Show more

“…Moreover, sequence comparisons and phylogenetic analysis of DAstV described by Fu et al (2009) suggest that astrovirus may transmit across ducks and turkeys. In Croatia, TastV-2 infection has been detected in turkey poults as one of the viral agents associated with PEMS (Lojkić et al, 2010). Furthermore, it would be also important to examine the occurrence of TAstV-1 infection in broiler breeder duck flocks; because this is the first finding of TAstV-1 in ducks, we do not know how common and prevalent this infection is.…”

“…However, a few molecular studies are available revealing its genetic information. They were first identified in late 1990s (Pedley et al 1986;Theil et al 1986b) followed by subsequent reports from Europe (Lojki et al 2009;Johne et al 2011) and Asia (Ahmed & Ahmed 2006;Otto et al 2012). AvRVs of groups F and G have been identified occasionally (Bezerra et al 2012;Otto et al 2012).…”

“…Recently, outbreaks of coronaviral enteritis have been reported from Arkansas and North Carolina in the USA with severe diarrhoea and mortality [ 19 , 83 , 100 , 106 ] indicating the importance of continuous epidemiological surveillance for this virus. TCoV appears to be absent from non-PEMS syndromes of PEC [ 44 , 45 , 62 , 68 , 75 , 105 ]. For example, no coronavirus was detected when 2,400 samples from poults showing clinical signs of enteritis were tested in California [ 105 ].…”
