Viral Suppression Levels in Men Who Have Sex With Men and Transgender Women With Newly Diagnosed HIV and Alcohol Use Disorder in Peru: Results From a Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Trial Using Oral Naltrexone

Abstract: Background: Alcohol use disorders (AUDs) are common in men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women (TGW) in Peru and undermine antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence. Oral naltrexone (NTX) is an evidence-based treatment for AUD that has not been assessed in cotreating AUD in MSM/TGW with HIV.

“…In Peru, there is an increase in heavy episodic drinking (i.e., binge drinking), and 14.0% of Peruvian males have an AUD [ 7 ]. AUD is thought to be more prevalent in PWH, especially MSM, due to alcohol’s disinhibitory effects that can lead to unsafe sex [ 8 , 9 ]. AUD in PWH has also been observed to have a negative influence on ART adherence and subsequent HIV management [ 8 , 9 ].…”
