Virtual anthropology and forensic identification using multidetector CT

Abstract: Virtual anthropology is made possible by modern cross-sectional imaging. Multislice CT (MSCT) can be used for comparative bone and dental identification, reconstructive identification and lesion identification. Comparative identification, the comparison of ante-and post-mortem imaging data, can be performed on both teeth and bones. Reconstructive identification, a considerable challenge for the radiologist, identifies the deceased by determining sex, geographical origin, stature and age at death. Lesion identi… Show more

“…Virtual anthropology consists of the introduction of modern slice imaging to anthropology [1]. Thanks to this non-invasive scientific revolution, some classifications that were first created on the basis of dry bone examination can be used in cadavers, with no particular soft tissue removal or bone preparation.…”

“…CBCT provides richly-detailed images and, as a result, a series of anatomical regions can be studied and interpreted objectively and in detail. This benefit has been highlighted mainly in the field of forensic sciences because CBCT is an accurate and non-invasive examination method for necropsy of carbonised or fragmented corpses [7,19,20].…”
