Virtual collaboration, satisfaction, and trust between nurses in the tele-ICU and ICUs: Results of a multilevel analysis

Abstract: Purpose To examine how tele-ICU nurse characteristics and organizational characteristics influence tele-ICU nurses’ trust and satisfaction of monitored bedside ICU nurses, and whether these influences are mediated by communication. “…Technologies like telemedicine are also enabling medical teams to work together without the limitations of proximity. This has allowed new models of collaborative care used in settings such as the intensive care unit with Tele-ICU [26,27] and during Covid-19 where groups of physicians and trainees could round on patients virtually to limit exposure [28,29]. Teamwork and good communication are key elements to building resilience [30], and recent technologies have enabled physicians to collaborate more seamlessly, enabling new models of care delivery and coordination.…”

“…We know little about the collaboration between staff in the tele-ICU and ICUs in this type of virtual team. Tele-ICUs are virtual teams that pose unique challenges because of their dynamic fluid membership: tele-ICU nurses and physicians have to deal with many ICUs simultaneously 8 . In this paper, we describe the work system barriers experienced by tele-ICU nurses and identify strategies tele-ICU nurses use in dealing with these barriers.…”
