Virtual Control Volume Approach to the Study of Climate Causal Flows: Identification of Humidity and Wind Pathways of Influence on Rainfall in Ecuador

Abstract: Unraveling the relationship between humidity, wind, and rainfall is vitally important to understand the dynamics of water vapor transport. In recent years, the use of causal networks to identify causal flows has gained much ground in the field of climatology to provide new insights about physical processes and hypothesize previously unknown ones. In this paper, the concept of a virtual control volume is proposed, which resembles the Eulerian description of a vector field, but is based on causal flows instead. … Show more

“…The prediction is performed for the period 2021-2070 (50y). Due to the complex dynamic processes controlling rainfall in the study area, climate models cannot satisfactorily reproduce daily rainfall [10], [11]. To evidence this fact in the TNC data, Fig.…”

“…Mid-latitude depressions are inclined to be weaker than normal. La Niña episodes include large-scale changes in the atmospheric winds across the tropical Pacific, including increased winds from the east across the eastern Pacific in the lower atmosphere and greater winds from the west over the eastern tropical Pacific in the upper atmosphere [46,47]. These conditions explain an increased strength of the equatorial Walker circulation.…”

“…While the detailed mechanism will be dependent on the complex dynamics present in the coupled system, recent approaches that represent this system in terms of a network of a relatively small number of interacting modes (Tsonis & Roebber, 2004;Donges et al, 2009bDonges et al, , 2009aSteinhaeuser et al, 2011Steinhaeuser et al, , 2012 can provide an intuitive, albeit highly simplified, description of the key physical processes. In particular, learning the structure of the interactions between teleconnections in a model and comparing the results to similar structures inferred from observations provides a means of assessing the model's representation of coupled modes of variability (Falasca et al, 2019;Nowack et al, 2020;Vázquez-Patiño et al, 2020).…”
