Virtual embolization for treatment support of intracranial AVMs using an interactive desktop and VR application

Abstract: Purpose The treatment of intracranial arteriovenous malformations (AVM) is challenging due to their complex anatomy. For this vessel pathology, arteries are directly linked to veins without a capillary bed in between. For endovascular treatment, embolization is carried out, where the arteries that supply the AVM are consecutively blocked. A virtual embolization could support the medical expert in treatment planning. Method We designed and implemen… Show more

“…Such interaction is available in other programs (e.g., ParaView), but to our knowledge these programs do not easily allow for inclusion of complementary data. Interestingly, related work has recently been conducted in this area for visualization of CFD simulation results of intracranial arteriovenous malformations (AVM) (37) in which users can interactively block arteries supplying an AVM in VR. Similar to the current workflow, the AVM study also leverages pre-computed CFD simulation results.…”

“…As the natural course related to pathophysiological events occurs as a result of two subsequent phases such as primary and secondary (delayed) injuries of the spinal cord [ 69 ], we showed that one of the most complex cases underwent a combined treatment, with complete occlusion of a lesion, showing that both techniques are not exclusive and together can achieve better results. In the near future, telemedicine and virtual embolizations could support neuroradiologists in treatment planning and in education in clinical practice, supporting a better understanding of these AVSs [ 70 , 71 , 72 ]. The visual exploration application can be extended by quantitative blood flow information listing pressure drops and further hemodynamic parameters [ 72 ].…”
