Virtual experience, real consequences: the potential negative emotional consequences of virtual reality gameplay

Abstract: As virtual reality (VR) technology enters mainstream markets, it is imperative that we understand its potential impacts on users, both positive and negative. In the present paper, we build on the extant literature's focus on the physical side effects of VR gameplay (e.g., cybersickness) by focusing on VR's potential to intensify users' experiences of negative emotions. We first conducted a preliminary survey to assess users' emotional responses during VR gameplay, with the results suggesting that certain VR si… Show more

“…In particular, VR promotes escapism where one is completely isolated from the real world, which increases addiction and causes detrimental effects to one's physical and psychological health. 68 Furthermore, VR creates an isolated environment, which many simulators are now trying to avoid by implementing collaborative features. During surgery, when a physician uses a VR headset, challenges may arise because the device could get in the way of effective and urgent communication with staff.…”

“…Robson and Tavinor [70] insisted that the ball-grabbing case may be described as "aggressive reality" if an encounter with a simulated cannibal is deemed to be "true fictionality." Moreover, studies have suggested that VR can create a highly realistic environment that can negatively impact users' addictive behavior [71]. erefore, the authors assume that VRR is one of the most important and significant factors and leads users toward addictive behavior.…”

“…Furthermore, adequate training for using the technologies is required for physicians and caretakers to maximize benefit from the treatments. VRT has been attributed to various side-effects, including dizziness, nausea, and eye-fatigue, effectively limiting the population who can participate in the treatments [65,66]. Given that elderly people already have decreased cognitive ability due to mental deterioration, VRT may cause further aggravation and discomfort.…”
