Virus excretion and cell‐mediated immunity during cytomegalovirus infection among healthy infants and children

Abstract: Specific cell-mediated immunity (CMI) and virus isolation were examined longitudinally to clarify the mechanism of the cessation of virus excretion in inapparent cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection among healthy infants and children. We measured leukocyte procoagulant activity (LPCA) responses to CMV antigen and to a purified protein derivative of tuberculin (PPD), with results expressed as a percentage reduction of recalcification (RC) time. Based on the results in seropositive and seronegative adult control subj… Show more

“…This latter observation confirms previous studies' findings of long-lasting suppression of lymphocyte blastogenic responses to HCMV in adults after mononucleosis [25] and in adolescents after asymptomatic primary HCMV infection [4]. Similar findings were observed in babies with perinatal or postnatal HCMV infection [26,27], in congenitally infected children, and in their mothers [28][29][30][31].…”

“…Virus excretion may continue for > 2 years, with virus usually being cleared from the throat before it is cleared from the urine [18,19]. Clearance depends on the acquisition of specific cell‐mediated immunity, rather than the appearance of antibodies against the virus [20]. The occurrence of CMV infection in the two brothers, who were both breast fed for > 1 year by their seropositive mother, and continual excretion of virus for 2–3 years is no different from the natural history of the condition in normal individuals.…”
