Until recently, there was a substantial lack of reliable viscosity data for H 2 S, making the regression of an accurate H 2 S viscosity model significantly difficult. To derive a model for engineering applications (2008 H 2 S model), a corresponding states approach that related molecules of similar shape to H 2 S was applied to cover regions where no experimental data was available. Recently, new primary low-density experimental data and derived theoretical information have been published. Additionally, new high-pressure H 2 S viscosity measurements [at (373.15 and 423.15) K and up to 100 MPa] have also been reported. Based on this, a new revised correlation for the viscosity of H 2 S is presented in this work. The current correlation reproduces the primary H 2 S viscosity data to within experimental uncertainty. The precision of the new correlation varies from reference quality (better than ± 0.20 %) at low-densities to an estimated ± 5 % at 100 MPa and temperatures between (373 and 423) K. Outside this range of temperature there are no data to validate the accuracy of the model at elevated pressures; therefore we have conservatively estimated an uncertainty of roughly 10 % in the low-temperature and high-density region (T < 323 K up to 100 MPa) and 5 % for the high-temperature region (T > 450 K up to 100 MPa).

A high-pressure vibrating tube densimeter, specified by the manufacturer for temperatures from (263 to 473) K at pressures up to 140 MPa, was tested at temperatures down to 100 K and from vacuum to pressures up to 10 MPa. To verify the functionality and overall performance under these conditions, the densimeter was calibrated with measurements under vacuum as well as methane and propane as reference fluids. The calibration range is T = (120 to 200) K at pressures from (2.0 to 10.0) MPa. To evaluate the recorded data, two established calibration models were used to describe the dependence of the densimeter's oscillation period on the investigated reference fluids' temperature, pressure, and density. The experiments showed that the vibrating tube densimeter is operational even at temperatures down to 100 K, but exhibits a shift of its vacuum resonance when subjected to thermal cycling at temperatures below 180 K. Accordingly, the calibration models were modified with respect to how the vacuum resonance is considered. Then, the determined calibration parameters reproduce the densities of the reference fluids within ± 0.10 kg·m−3 for the calibration model that performed better for the present study. Measurements on pure ethane and argon validate the calibration of the densimeter. Here, the densities are within (− 0.47 to 0.16) kg·m−3 of values calculated with the respective reference equation of state. The estimated combined expanded uncertainty (k = 2) in density for the validation measurements ranges from (0.52 to 1.13) kg·m−3 or is less than 0.1 % for liquid densities.

A Residual Entropy Scaling Approach for Viscosity Based on the GERG-2008 Equation of State

A simple model for viscosity based on residual entropy scaling is proposed in this study. The thermodynamic model applied to calculate residual entropy is the Groupe Europeén de Recherches Gazieres (GERG) 2008 equation of state. Dimensionless pure-component viscosity as a function of residual entropy is correlated by a third-order polynomial. The component specific coefficients of the polynomial are adjusted to pure-component viscosity data. Averaged over all pure-component data points, deviation accounts to only 3.21%. Viscosity for mixtures is predicted by using the mole fraction weighted average of the purecomponent coefficients in the polynomial. Excellent results are obtained for natural gas mixtures. The averaged deviation for all 2021 evaluated natural gas data points is as low as 3.09%. Compared to alternative mixture viscosity models, this purely predictive approach is among the best performing models for most studied natural gas mixtures and sour gas samples. The proposed approach is not limited to natural gas viscosity, that is, methane-rich multi-component systems. Accurate predictions are also presented for binary and ternary mixtures over wide temperature and pressure ranges.
