Viscous, damping, and mechanical properties of epoxy asphalt adhesives containing different penetration‐grade asphalts

Abstract: Epoxy asphalt adhesive (EAA) is a thermosetting polymer modified asphalt that has been widely applied on steel bridge decks as a strong adhesive and waterproof layers. In this study, the influence of the asphalt penetration grade on the viscosity, damping and mechanical properties, bond strength, and microstructures of EAAs was investigated. The viscosity of the EAAs increased with increasing asphalt penetration grade. The presence of base asphalt increased the glass-transition temperature (T g ) of the neat e… Show more

“…e damping properties of EA correlated well with noise and vibration reduction capability, which have often been characterized by tanδ at room temperature ((tan δ) RT ) [7,69] or maximum tan δ ((tan δ) max ) [7,16,72,129], temperature range (ΔT) for effective damping (tan δ > 0.3), and the area under tan δ versus temperature curve (TA) [7,16,72,129] (see Table 2). Large values of (tan δ) RT , (tan δ) max , TA, and ΔT indicate better damping properties for EA [69].…”

“…e tensile strength was increased, and the elongation was decreased while the asphalt content was reduced [16,73,81,113] (see also Figure 26) or curing time was increased in EA [5,20,113,124]. With the increase of penetration grade, tensile strength and elongation for EA were both increased [129] and this increase might be attributed to better dispersion of asphalt particles within the epoxy matrix for softer binder. A peak tensile strength value of epoxy repair materials was obtained when 10 phr asphalt was added to ER [84].…”

“…Tetra-needle-like ZnO whiskers (T-ZnOw) can reduce the surface deformation of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) composites due to its unique three-dimensional structure which can restore worn surfaces [ 25 , 26 ]. In addition, the utilization of flower-like fillers, such as MoS 2 , can transform an applied external force into internal friction within the polymers by increasing the contact area, which decreases the surface deformation tendency [ 27 , 28 , 29 , 30 ]. Furthermore, a few particles with chemical potential have been studied to improve the lubricating effects of polymers in particular lubricating conditions.…”
