Visible embodiment: Gestures as simulated action

Abstract: Gestures are often considered to be valid evidence of the embodiment of language and cognition. Since people use their bodies (i.e., gestures) to express knowledge, it is argued, the knowledge itself must be deeply tied to the body (Alibali & Nathan, 2007;Gallagher, 2005;Gibbs, 2006;Hostetter & Alibali, 2004;McNeill, 2005;Nuñez, 2005). This claim may hold some truth, but to date, there have been no explicit proposals about how embodied knowledge comes to be reflected in speech-accompanying gestures. The goal o… Show more

“…These theories contrast with theories that embed gesture generation solely within speech production processes (Butterworth & Hadar, 1989;de Ruiter, 2000;McNeill, 1992) The Gesture-for-Conceptualization Hypothesis builds on the idea that gestures are generated from the same process that generates practical actions (cf. Chu & Kita, 2015;Hostetter & Alibali, 2008;Kita, 2000;Kita & Özyürek, 2003). That is, the information encoded in gestures is generated from the action system.…”

“…[25,39]). Recently, Hostetter & Alibali [40] proposed that these gestures result from a direct extension of mentally simulated action and perception. In their view, gesture arises when activation spreads from the areas involved in action planning to those involved in action execution.…”

“…This discrepancy between the content of co-speech gestures and speech suggests that co-speech gestures, at least sometimes, may be generated from a process that is not part of the speech production process. Some researchers hypothesized that this process is the action generation process, which is responsible for generating purposeful actions that have a direct physical impact on the world, such as manipulating an object or locomotion (Hostetter & Alibali, 2008;Kita, 2000Kita, , 2014Kita & Özyürek, 2003). Co-speech gestures are the representational use of such actions.…”
