Mapping Industry 4.0 Enabling Technologies into United Nations Sustainability Development Goals

The emerging of the fourth industrial revolution, also known as Industry 4.0 (I4.0), from the advancement in several technologies is viewed not only to promote economic growth, but also to enable a greener future. The 2030 Agenda of the United Nations for sustainable development sets out clear goals for the industry to foster the economy, while preserving social well-being and ecological validity. However, the influence of I4.0 technologies on the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) has not been conclusively or systematically investigated. By understanding the link between the I4.0 technologies and the SDGs, researchers can better support policymakers to consider the technological advancement in updating and harmonizing policies and strategies in different sectors (i.e., education, industry, and governmental) with the SDGs. To address this gap, academic experts in this paper have investigated the influence of I4.0 technologies on the sustainability targets identified by the UN. Key I4.0 element technologies have been classified to enable a quantitative mapping with the 17 SDGs. The results indicate that the majority of the I4.0 technologies can contribute positively to achieving the UN agenda. It was also found that the effects of the technologies on individual goals varies between direct and strong, and indirect and weak influences. The main insights and lessons learned from the mapping are provided to support future policy.

This study interviewed game audio professionals to establish the implementation requirements for an experiment to ascertain the effect of different spatial audio localisation systems on the perception of threat in a first-person shooter. In addition, a listening study was carried out involving 35 members of the public, and using three scenes made in Unreal Engine 4 with custom designed sound, authored in Wwise. This established that spatial audio does, indeed, have a noticeable effect on players' perception of threat. Each spatial audio system, however, had different effects on the perception of threat, stealth, realism and position estimation, on all three different visual scenes. Meanwhile, the absence of spatial audio can confuse people and contribute towards inaccurate enemy localisation. With this in mind, a tailored approach to the game design requirements for each project is recommended. Rather than a single, spatialised design for the entire game, each scene should have its own design solution. A complete understanding of decision-making in military domains requires gathering insights from several fields of study. To make the task tractable, here we consider a specific example of short-term tactical decisions under uncertainty made by the military at sea. Through this lens, we sketch out relevant literature from three psychological tasks each underpinned by decision-making processes: categorisation, communication and choice. From the literature, we note two general cognitive tendencies that emerge across all three stages: the effect of cognitive load and individual differences. Drawing on these tendencies, we recommend strategies, tools and future research that could improve performance in military domains – but, by extension, would also generalise to other high-stakes contexts. In so doing, we show the extent to which domain general properties of high order cognition are sufficient in explaining behaviours in domain specific contexts.
