Visual impairment in Nordic children

Abstract: Careful clinical-aetiological assessment of visually impaired children is one of the prerequisites for prevention of future, 'unavoidable' cases of visual impairment of children in the industrialized part of the world. In a collaborative study (NORDSYN) between four Nordic national registers of visual impairment, we analysed and classified some of the factors considered to be essential components for the development of low vision or blindness in children. We discuss the conceptual basis for aetiological classi… Show more

“…In this study, as well as in the one by Rosenberg et al (1992), the infantile/juvenile group was small, 7.2%. Historically, infections causing visual impairment were predominantly corneal infections (Norrie 1927) and this is still true in some parts of the world (Foster & Gilbert 1992).…”

“…In 1990 data from the continuous registration in Denmark, Finland, Iceland and Norway were compiled into a common database, resulting in a register of 2527 children altogether. Based on this a thorough analysis was made of prevalence, etiologies and diagnoses Rosenberg et al 1992;Hansen et al 1992). Sweden could not be included, since the earlier registration (Lindstedt 1972(Lindstedt , 1975 had been dormant.…”

“…In Hong Kong, retina accounted for 47.6% (39 students) (ROP, 21 students), optic nerve and CNS diseases were found among 17.1% [19]. Among those countries, the common aetiologies were prenatal factors, including genetic diseases and perinatal factors, including prematurity [16][17][18][19][20]. As neonatal services continue to improve, blindness from ROP is now largely reported only in premature babies with very low birth weight (less than 1.500 grams at birth) and extremely low birth weight group (less than 1.000 grams at birth) [15,[21][22][23].…”
