Visualization of Anisotropic and Stepwise Piezofluorochromism in an MOF Single Crystal

Abstract: A metal-organic framework (MOF) with pressure-responsive photoluminescence was designed by installation of mixed organic linkers into different positions in the coordination space. Anisotropic and stepwise piezofluorochromism was visualized by the MOF single crystals, providing potential for display, barcoding, and sensing fields in photophysical devices.

“…3c and S11†). Although MOFs responding to external pressure35 and chemical species36 alter the colour of their fluorescence to a similarly strong extent, such drastic changes occurring in MOFs as a function of temperature are relatively rare 37. Further heating and cooling of the material gives a very similar emission and intensity profile as in the first thermal sequence (Fig.…”

“…It is well known that generally zirconium‐based MOFs possess good structural stability . MOF‐808(Zr) as one member of them has received much attention due to its advantages such as high specific surface area (∼2000 m 2 /g), large pore opening, good stability and rich metal sites .…”

“…It is noteworthy that there are many important reports pertinent to the abovementioned seven types of stimuli [ 226–233 ] and some other stimuli‐responsive systems are not discussed in this article due to the space limitation, such as the responses to magnetic field, [ 234 ] chemical species like NH 3 and H 2 S, [ 235,236 ] organic pollutants, [ 237 ] and drugs, [ 238 ] and the specific response to biological species like DNA, [ 239 ] virus, [ 240 ] pathogen, [ 241 ] bacteria, [ 242 ] etc. In these cases, AIEgens can also signal their responses to these stimuli in the form of luminescence.…”
