Many studies report that comics are useful as learning material. However, there is little known about how learning with comics works. Based on previously established theories about multimedia learning, we conducted an eye-tracking experiment to examine learning about geography with a specially designed combination of comic and map which we call geo-comic. In our experiment, we show that our geo-comic fulfills many prerequisites for promoting deep learning. Thus, we establish guidelines for an effective design of geo-comics and recommend deploying comics in combination with maps in geography classes.

Eine gemeinsame Mitteleinwerbung auf Fakultätsebene erlaubt nun einen personellen Ausbau des mLabs, internationale Kolloquien zu Themen rund um Digitalisierung, eine gemeinsame Durchführung des Global Science Filmfestivals mit Zürich und kurzzeitige Finanzierungen für Initiativen, durch die die Zusammenarbeit von Wissenschaftler*innen und Kunstschaffenden gefördert wird.…”

Abstract. In this “positioning” we discuss current developments, possibilities and challenges around working with film in and for geography. We describe possibilities that certain conscious and collaborative ways of employing film offer: They point beyond film analysis and are more than a mere add-on to communicate research results, but rather can stimulate new forms of reflexivity and creativity along different steps of research and teaching processes. We further show how the emergence of new digital and physical platforms can enable and support exchange on film and other digital media, using the example of our new media laboratory (mLab) at the University of Bern.

Abstract. Publications from the early quantitative revolution in geography saw a significant change in the use of visual material. While the old regionalist paradigm of "Länderkunde" was dominated by images of "geographical individuals" the new geography was dominated by abstract models and visualized laws and theories. Overall visual material gains in importance, both quantitatively and qualitatively. This paper follows the changed functions, possibilities and promises of visualizing epistemic things in geography's new paradigm. This is done by following the translations, transformations and mobilizations of the famous hexagon Walter Christaller published in his 1933 "Theory of central places in South Germany". Since the 1940s this Hexagon has become not only an icon of the new geography, but an instrument for making quantitative-theoretical thinking in the geography plausible and at the same time to build a visual bridge between the old and the new geography.
