Vitamin B12and its binding proteins in hepatocellular carcinoma and chronic liver diseases

Abstract: B12 and B12-related proteins (total B12, HC, TC, holoTC, and sCD320) show elevations in both HCC and CLD patients compared to controls, suggesting a relation to CLD in general rather than to primary liver cancer. Thus, HC is not useful as a biomarker for HCC.

“…Many groups have reported various immunohistochemical markers in FL‐HCC, including HepPar1, CD68, FGFR1, cytokeratin 7, epithelial membrane antigen, and various neuroendocrine markers, none of which are specific for FL‐HCC . Serum markers found to be elevated in FL‐HCC include vitamin B12 binding capacity and haptocorrin, whereas alpha‐fetoprotein is rarely elevated in these patients, unlike in classical HCC . Collier et al.…”

“…Study exclusion criteria were portal vein thrombosis, previous cancer, current cancer apart from HCC, and impaired kidney function (creatinine N 150 μmol/l). Some clinical data on the HCC cohort has recently been described in a publication focusing on vitamin B12 and its binding proteins [21].…”

“…High level of VitB12 and its related proteins (i.e. haptocorrin (HC), transcobalamin (TC), VitB12 saturated TC (holoTC), and the soluble cell surface receptor for holoTC (sCD320)) were found also in patients affected by fibrolamellar hepatocellular carcinoma or other chronic liver diseases [157].…”
