Vitamin E Serum Levels in Newborn Infants Undergoing Phototherapy

Abstract: The serum vitamin E levels of 11 full-term and 10 premature infants, jaundiced and subjected to phototherapy, were measured and compared with 9 premature and 10 full-term jaundiced control infants. No differences were observed before or after phototherapy or 1 week after stopping it. The same negative results were noted in the two groups of infants regarding the values of microhematocrit, Hb and reticulocytes.

“…Oxidants such as nitric oxide (NO) play an important role in the pathogenesis of various human diseases, especially in the neonatal period. The organism's essential antioxidant defence system against reactive oxygen species includes bilirubin, the erythrocytic enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GSH‐Px) and low molecular weight antioxidant vitamins A, E and C and trace element selenium (Se) 3−8 . It is also known that the neonates, particulary the preterm infants, have limited antioxidant protective capacity against the circulating free radicals 7−10 .…”

“…Lipid peroxidation of the erythrocyte membranes exterminates their ability to change form as they pass through the capillaries and leads to intravascular haemolysis. Lipid peroxidation reactions of the erythrocyte membranes can only be controlled through the intermediary of antioxidant substances 3−6 .…”

“…KEW WORDS: Bile acids, cholic acid, chenodeoxycholic acid, phototherapy, exchange transfusion, newborns, hyperbilirubinaemia Kopelman et al (1) have shown that some neonates may develop cholestasis, the 'bronze' baby syndrome, during phototherapy. On the other hand no evidence has been produced showing that phototherapy has a direct effect on the liver cells of human newborns (2, 3).…”

“…Αν τίθετα οι Blackburn et al, (1972a) δεν διαπίστωσαν in vivo βλάβη των ερυθροκυττάρων από την φωτοθεραπεία. Με τα πορίσματα της μελέτης αυτής συμφωνούν και άλλοι ερευνητές (Chandler et al, 1977, Tan 1977a, Maurer et al, 1979, Hadjigeorgiou et al, 1980, ενώ πρόσφατα οι Alpert et al, (1984), απέδειξαν ότι, σε αντίθεση με τα in vitro πορίσματα των Cukier et al, (1979), σε αρουραίους, η φωτοθεραπεία δεν αυξάνει in vivo την ωσμωτική ευθραυστότητα των ερυθρών αιμοσφαιρίων του ανθρώπινου νεογνού.…”
