Vitamin e status during dietary fish oil supplementation in rheumatoid arthritis

Abstract: The primary objective of this study was to determine whether it is the fish oil itself or the α‐tocopherol that is added to the fish oil preparations (to prevent peroxidation) that is responsible for the beneficial effects of dietary supplementation with fish oil in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). One group of RA patients took fish oil supplements and another group took α‐tocopherol‐enriched coconut oil supplements (placebo controls), both for 3 months. Clinical and laboratory indices of RA activity i… Show more

“…Beneficial effects of dietary supplementation with 0 3 have been demonstrated in some (4-7), but not all (8), animal models of inflammatory disease and in (mainly short-term) clinical studies in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) (9)(10)(11)(12)(13)(14)(15)(16)(17). Long-term data in humans are presently scarce (18).…”

“…Several authors reported that fish oils reduces the production of inflammatory mediators like LTB 4 by neutrophils and monocytes (Kremer et al, 1985;Kremer et al, 1987;Cleland et al, 1988;Tulleken et al, 1990;van der Tempel et al, 1990) and IL-1 by monocytes (Kremer et al, 1990). There is also evidence of reduction in the plasma concentrations of IL-1 (Espersen et al, 1992)and Creactive protein (Kremer et al, 1985), and normalized neutrophil function (Sperling et al, 1987).…”
