“…Our results agree with those of previous studies on the use of ophthalmic surgery simulators (Sinclair et al 1995;O'Toole et al 1999;Voss et al 1999;Hikichi et al 2000;Berg et al 2001;Kaufmann 2001;Tsai et al 2001;Witzke et al 2001). Important and complicated steps in vitreoretinal surgery such as peeling of epiretinal membranes may be at least partially learnt by using a pars plana vitrectomy simulator where the training success and the surgical capacity of the test candidate can be assessed.…”

“…Advances in computer technology have prepared the ground for new and innovative teaching strategies in the form of increasingly sophisticated virtual reality (VR) training simulators which allow for high-fidelity operation simulations. VR surgery simulators have been developed for retrobulbar injection [11], capsulorhexis [23,24], phacoemulsification [8,19], retinal photocoagulation [15] and vitreoretinal surgery [5,16,22]. Skill acquisition has been demonstrated for a retinal photocoagulation simulator [12].…”

“…Hikichi et al have recently reported a similar simulator for vitreous surgery but technical details are lacking in the paper. 14 We are also aware of a commercial development of a virtual reality simulator by a German company, but this has not been the subject of a research paper. Collaborative efforts are now under way between our groups to develop the system further so as to provide a 'near live' experience of vitreoretinal surgery to the trainees.…”
