“…The present study found that the semi-permeable layer of switchgrass was stained yellow with aniline blue [39], which demonstrated that its main chemical composition should be suberin. Quantum chemical calculations can provide information at the molecular level, and many studies [40] demonstrate that metal ions can be bound to chemical components of seed by coordinate covalent bonds or H-bonds. Based upon the suberin macromolecular structure proposed by Graca and Santos [20], our quantum chemical calculations suggest that the suberin molecule had a layered structure, and [La(H 2 O) 8 ] 3+ could not penetrate it because the intervals between adjacent carbon chains were very small.…”

“…(Guo et al, 1996 ), and a REE-binding peptide also from coral fern (Wang et al, 2003 ). Recent studies showed that REEs lanthanum and terbium can activate plant endocytosis and their entrance to cells by endocytosis (Wang et al, 2014 , 2016 ; Yang et al, 2016 ). REEs in soil solutions and their contents in plant tissues are much lower than Ti (Tyler, 2004 ).…”

“…Lanthanum is first anchored on the plasma membrane in the form of nanoscale particles (Wang et al, 2014 ). Importantly, vitronectin-like protein (VN) is an anchoring site and binding target for La found on the plasma membrane of Arabidopsis leaf cells, and VN may act as a defense mechanism to resist the entry of La into plant cells (Yang et al, 2016 ). Once anchored on the plasma membrane, La may enter the cell by endocytosis, and a portion of it is released into the cytoplasm, self-assembled, and formed into nanoscale clusters.…”
