“…However, to the best of our knowledge, there is currently no integrin α3‐targeting therapeutic antibody under development. Targeting integrin α3 might cause adverse effects as the protein is required for basement‐membrane structures within the kidney, lung, and skin 81,82 and it is also widely expressed in both fetal and adult epidermis 23,83 . Despite this potential, we found that OV‐Ab 30‐7 did not induce normal epithelial cell apoptosis, raising the possibility that OV‐Ab 30‐7 induces cancer cell apoptosis due to oncogenic addiction; this idea is similar to in our previous study on the anti‐EpCAM antibody, EpAb2‐6 40,84 .…”

“…Our findings indicating that the antibody against α3β1 integrin was associated with tumor recurrence also support this hypothesis. Regarding antibodies specificity, the monoclonal anti α3 (P1B5) recognizes only the “a” epitope of α3 subunit 16,17, while the anti α3β1 (M‐KID2) recognizes an epitope related to the whole complex of α3β1 integrin 18,19. Therefore, when we say that α3 and α3β1 immuno‐expression is independently related to biochemical recurrence, we mean that α3β1integrin has a role in PCa progression.…”

“…laminin, collagen type-IV, fibronectin, nidogen (Dehar et al, 1992) and, most likely, epiligrin (Carter et al, 1991). The heterodimer in fact displays a wide distribution in cells of different histotypes (Bartolazzi et al, 1992). From the functional point of view, expression of VLA3 has been positively correlated with the ability of cells to adhere to culture dishes (Rettig et a/., 1986), (Carter et al, 1990).…”

“…Because our present knowledge of integrin structure and function is derived primarily from in vitro models, an understanding of their in vivo patterns of expression in normal and transformed tissues is clearly a requisite for assessment of their pathogenetic role in tumor biology. In this context, a previous study (Bartolazzi et al, 1992) has demonstrated that the a3/i3/p1 heterodimer, possessing promiscuous receptorial activity for basement membrane components, is expressed by a variety of normal cells of non-lymphoid lineage. In the present work we have evaluated whether the receptor undergoes modulation following malignant transformation and tumor progression.…”
