VLBI Space Observatory Programme Observation of the Quasar PKS 2215+020: A New Laboratory for Core‐Jet Physics atz = 3.572

Abstract: We report results of a VLBI Space Observatory Programme (VSOP) observation of a high-redshift quasar, PKS 2215]020 (z \ 3.57). The D1 mas resolution image of the quasar reveals a prominent "" core-jet ÏÏ structure on linear scales from 5 h~1 to 300 h~1 pc h km s~1 Mpc~1). The bright-(H 0 \ 100 ness temperatures and sizes of bright features identiÐed in the jet are consistent with emission from relativistic shocks dominated by adiabatic energy losses. The jet is powered by a central black hole with estimated ma… Show more

“…Our 5‐GHz image has a similar resolution to the Lobanov et al (2001) image but is less sensitive to the extended jet emission; hence, our image has a similar but sparser intensity distribution. We also detect the particularly bright region, where the jet changes direction from east to north‐east on the plane of the sky.…”
