This study compares the estimations of two predictive approaches, namely, CP-PC-SAFT and CS-SAFT-VR-Mie for vapor pressures, saturated and high-pressure densities, sound velocities, isobaric and isochoric heat capacities of 17 representative substituted fluoro- and chloromethanes, ethanes, ethenes, propanes, and propenes, whose data are available under a wide range of conditions. Predictions of vapor–liquid equilibria (VLE) in their binary systems comprising inter alia carbon dioxide, hydrocarbons, and light gas systems with k 12 = 0 are considered as well. These models do not incorporate associative and polar interactions, which allows parametrization based on the particularly limited amount of literature data. It is demonstrated that although the overall accuracies of the considered approaches are reasonably good, each of them has their advantages and disadvantages. For example, SAFT-VR-Mie typically predicts more accurately some VLE in the symmetric systems, while CP-PC-SAFT is advantageous in estimating phase behavior of the asymmetric ones. Both models can be applied for preliminary estimation of unavailable halocarbon data for which each of them exhibits a relative superiority. In addition to this, it is demonstrated that SAFT-VR-Mie attached by square gradient theory with predictive correlation for influence parameters accurately estimates surface tensions of the considered compounds.

We have designed and constructed an isochoric apparatus for fast and accurate pressure-volumetemperature ipVT) and phase equilibrium measurements. The apparatus allows isochoric (p, Tat constant V) measurements for noncorrosive fluids over a wide range of pressures (7-105 MPa) and temperatures (100-450 K). Densities can be derived from densities determined at one isotherm (p, V at constant T) with another apparatus, such as a pycnometer or a Burnett apparatus. Temperatures are accurate to ±10 mK and precise to ±1 mK on ITS-90. Pressure measurements are accurate to ±10 kPa and precise to ±2 kPa. This apparatus requires about 20 min for temperature equilibration for measurements 2 K apart and about 50 min for measurements 10 K apart. We have measured 23 phase boundary points for three mole fractions, x\ = 0.3991, 0.4459, and 0.5037, for CO2 (1) + N2 (2) at temperatures from 207 to 268 K and pressures from 10.8 to 21.5 MPa. The estimated accuracy is ±40 mK in temperature and ±17 kPa in pressure. The isochoric measurements used to obtain these phase boundary points extend from 205 to 300 K and from 8 to 80 MPa. We have determined the saturation density for 20 of the phase boundary points. The saturation densities and the densities along the isochores were derived from density measurements at 300 and 285 K measured with a pycnometer estimated to be accurate to ±0.1%. The behavior of the solid + fluid phase boundary is discussed.

In this paper, main and interactive effects of four important factors, temperatures, adsorption thicknesses, fracture apertures, and feed CO2 concentrations, on the thermodynamic phase behavior for CO2 storage processes in the fractured nanopores of shale/tight reservoirs with adsorptions are investigated. First, a modified analytical equation of state is developed by considering the effects of confinements and intermolecular interactions, which is applied to predict the confined pure/mixing fluid phase behavior in fractured nanopores coupled with a novel empirical correlation for the adsorption thickness and the fracture geometry equation. Second, the aforementioned four important factors are studied to evaluate their main and interactive effects on the phase behavior of pure CO2, N2, O2, Ar, alkanes of C1–10, and their mixtures. It is found that all the pure and mixing fluid pressures monotonically and linearly increase to different extents with an increasing temperature. Moreover, the pressures/critical shifts and critical properties perform downward and upward parabola curves with respect to the adsorption thicknesses, respectively. On the other hand, the pressures/critical shifts are monotonically decreased, while the critical properties increase with the fracture apertures increasing from 0.01 up to 10 nm and remain constant afterward. By increasing the feed CO2 concentrations, the critical shifts and pressures for all of pure and mixing fluids are increased, while both the critical pressures and temperatures decrease. In addition, three interactive effects on the phase behavior are analyzed that the effect of a single factor behaves differently with the variations of any other factors. Finally, the amounts of the N2, O2, Ar, and light alkanes of C1–4 are suggested to be controlled for CO2 storage in the fractured nanopores because additions of these components strongly affect the mixture phase behavior.
