Vocalisation and its association with androgens and corticosterone in a night frog (Nyctibatrachus humayuni) with unique breeding behaviour

Abstract: In anurans, vocalisation is used to communicate within and between the sexes during reproduction. Knowledge of vocal repertoire and its diversity is essential in understanding its significance in sexual selection. In this context, we studied the vocal behaviour of Nyctibatrachus humayuni and quantified the urinary metabolites of androgens and corticosterone to understand the associations among hormones, body condition index and vocalisation. Our results show that males of N. humayuni produce an amplitude‐modul… Show more

“…By using uGMs, valuable information can also be obtained regarding the influence of the stress endocrine system on amphibian reproduction (Joshi et al, 2019a). For example, research in both captive and free-living amphibian species have successfully applied uGMs to study the interactions between corticosterone and reproductive hormones, body condition, and breeding behavior (e.g., vocalization in males and vitellogenesis in females; Joshi et al, 2019b).…”

“…Insights from animal behaviour are currently under-utilised in conservation research despite having many promising applications (Angeloni et al 2008;Berger-Tal et al 2016). Vocalising is a highly important behaviour for many species, with a variety of uses including territory defence (Krebs et al 1978;Harrington and Mech 1979;Amorim and Neves 2008) and mate acquisition (Harrington and Asa 2003;Joshi et al 2019). Integrating the protection of habitats that permit vocalisation into landscape management is, therefore, vital to the conservation of many vocalising species.…”

“…We studied N. humayuni at two locations in Maharashtra (Adarwadi village, Pune district, 18° 25.838’N, 73° 24.085’ E, 634 metres above sea level, and Matheran, Raigad district, 19°00’N, 73°17’E, 800 metres above sea level) in June-July 2019. Matheran is a known locality for N. humayuni (Biju et al 2011; Gramapurohit et al 2011; Joshi et al 2019). These localities comprise mid-elevation wet evergreen forest, receiving about 4073 mm rainfall annually (Sawant et al 2020).…”
