Volatile emission in dry seeds as a way to probe chemical reactions during initial asymptomatic deterioration

Abstract: HighlightSpecies, storage products, and moisture have large effects on the nature and quantity of volatile emission from dry seeds, but storage time and seed viability do not.

“…The mitochondrial membrane is known to be among the primary sites of deterioration, for instance, during seed ageing, because mitochondrial activity has been clearly demonstrated to be the primary source of energy (adenosine triphosphate) for cells (Delouche and Baskin, 1973;Nelson and Cox, 2012). A decrease in the mitochondrial efficiency is correlated with an increase in the production of volatile compounds, especially ethanol (Akimoto et al, 2004;Colville et al, 2012;Mira et al, 2016;Woodstock and Taylorson, 1981). In the past, the method has been based on benchtop multiparameter instruments, using gas chromatography or enzyme sensor technology, both of which are slow and costly for routine analyses of multiple samples (Bicanic et al, 2003;Kataki and Taylor, 2001;Mira et al, 2010;Mira et al, 2016).…”

“…Time for germination percentage to decrease to 80, 50, and 10% (P80, P50, and P10, respectively) was calculated using the dose.p function available in R ( R Core Team, 2016 ). We used the value of P80 to indicate the duration of the initial asymptomatic phase of seed deterioration ( Mira et al , 2016 ).…”

“…This process involves several controlling mechanisms associated to progressive molecular damages. Some reactions may occur even when the seeds have low moisture contents, among which fermentation, oxidation, peroxidation and glycation are most recurrent (Mira et al, 2016;Walters et al, 2010). The results of the adjusted emergence curve of S. schizophylla made evident different responses to the temperatures used ( Figure 3).…”
