Voltage-peak synchronous closing control for shunt capacitors

Abstract: The paper presents a new synchronous closing control, the voltage-peak closing method, to reduce shunt capacitor inrush currents andovervoltages. Switch timing and precharged voltages for energising a single capacitor bank, a back-to-back capacitor bank and a three-phase capacitor bank are presented. The effects of switch-closing speed and timing deviation are discussed. Two examples are illustrated to show the excellent performance.
