Volumetric display with holographic parallel optical access and multilayer fluorescent screen

Abstract: We propose a volumetric display based on holographic parallel optical access and two-photon excitation using a computer-generated hologram displayed on a liquid crystal spatial light modulator and a multilayer fluorescent screen. The holographic parallel optical access increased the number of voxels of the volumetric image per unit time. This approach increased the total input energy to the volumetric display, that is, the total fluorescence power, because the maximum energy incident at a point in the multilay… Show more

“…To effectively address the accommodation-vergence conflict (AVC) problem, various display techniques have been proposed for AR applications, including integral imaging display, 4,[8][9][10][11] holographic display, 12,13 supermutiview display, 14,15 and volumetric display. [16][17][18][19][20][21][22][23] Integral imaging display can also provide correct accommodation depth cue by generating numerous elemental images with a microlens array, but the spatial resolution of the 3D images is greatly reduced. Holographic display is considered as the ideal display method because it can faithfully reconstruct light wavefront with all correct depth cues.…”

“…Over the past few years, we have developed three types of optically access-based volumetric display system using different screen mediums (solid, liquid and gas). In 2015, the first work on volumetric displays in our group demonstrated some important features, including a multilayer fluorescent solid screen for achieving a color display by changing the fluorescent material in each layer, and holographic parallel optical access via twophoton excitation for increasing the number of voxels per unit time [16]. The holographic parallel optical access was performed with a computer-generated hologram (CGH) displayed on a liquidcrystal spatial light modulator (LCSLM).…”

“…Variety of 3D products such as naked-eye 3D mobile phone, panel display, television, and digital photo frame, are now appearing on the market. There have been different kinds of technologies to realize naked-eye 3D display, including holographic display [4][5][6], volumetric display [7][8][9], and autostereoscopic display [10][11][12][13][14][15]. Holographic display is regarded as a powerful technique for naked-eye 3D display.…”
